30 High-Yield Topics for the NEC Civil License Exam
These are the topics that appear most often in model sets and prep question banks, mapped to the official syllabus chapters. Each gets one line on why it pays off.
Structural (Structural Mechanics + Design of Structures)
- SF/BM diagrams and point of contraflexure (4.1) — the single most-tested diagram skill; fast marks if you can sketch them.
- Principal stresses and Mohr’s circle (4.2) — formula + graphical questions repeat every cycle.
- Deflection methods — virtual work, slope deflection, moment distribution (4.4, 4.6) — at least one “which method / carry-over moment” question is near-guaranteed.
- Euler’s buckling and effective length factors (4.3) — one-line recall question, easy mark.
- Limit state vs working stress — safety factors, stress blocks (5.3) — 1.5 for concrete, 1.15 for steel is classic MCQ fodder.
- RCC detailing rules — development length, cover, max steel % (5.3–5.4) — code-number questions are cheap marks for anyone who memorized IS 456 basics.
Geotechnical
- Phase relationships — e, n, w, Gs conversions (2.1) — one numerical every paper; the formula triangle solves them in seconds.
- Effective stress, capillarity and quicksand condition (2.2) — conceptual + one numerical on critical hydraulic gradient.
- Shear strength — Mohr–Coulomb, K₀ = 1 − sin φ (2.3) — Jaky’s equation and direct-shear/triaxial test facts repeat constantly.
- Terzaghi’s bearing capacity — factors depend on φ only (2.6) — Nc = 5.7 for φ = 0 is a favourite one-liner.
- Compaction vs consolidation (2.2, 2.6) — the distinction (expulsion of air vs water, Proctor vs time-settlement) is a classic trap question.
Hydraulics / Water
- Bernoulli + continuity numerics (3.3) — diameter-halved → velocity ×4 type questions are free marks.
- Major/minor losses — Darcy–Weisbach, HGL/TEL (3.4) — “which formula for major loss” appears in some form every time.
- Hydraulic jump and specific energy (3.5) — supercritical → subcritical transition is the most-asked open-channel concept.
- Duty–delta–base period relation, D = 8.64B/Δ (7.1) — irrigation’s highest-yield single formula.
- Seepage theories — Bligh, Lane, Khosla (7.3) — “which theory for weirs on permeable foundations” is a straight recall hit.
Transportation
- Super-elevation and stopping sight distance (9.2) — both formula-recall and “why provided” concept questions.
- CBR test and subgrade evaluation (9.3, 9.5) — the one pavement-design test every paper references.
- Traffic studies — volume, speed, O&D, accident (9.4) — descriptive but high-frequency; one question per paper is typical.
- Flexible vs rigid pavement behaviour (9.5) — load transfer by grain-to-grain vs slab action is a standard compare question.
Construction Management (Project Planning — Ch. 10)
- CPM vs PERT — critical path, expected time te = (to+4tm+tp)/6 (10.3) — the most numerical chapter-10 topic.
- NPV, IRR, MARR and payback (10.2) — “project viable if NPV positive” style decision questions.
- Tendering process and contract types (10.4) — pure recall, heavily represented in chapter-10 questions.
- NEC Act & Regulations + NEA role (10.5, 10.6) — the “gimme” section: who regulates engineers in Nepal is always asked.
Surveying
- Levelling — HI method, rise-and-fall, arithmetic checks (1.5) — one numerical on closing error or reduced levels is standard.
- Simple circular curve elements (1.5) — tangent length T = R·tan(Δ/2) and degree-of-curve relations.
- Bearing systems — WCB vs QB conversions (1.5) — quick conversion questions reward anyone who practised them.
Estimating
- Centre-line vs long-wall/short-wall methods (1.6) — “which method suits similar cross-sections” is asked verbatim in model sets.
- Rate analysis ingredients — materials + labour + overhead (1.6) — definition-style questions, easy marks.
- Types of estimate — preliminary, detailed, revised, supplementary (1.6) — matching-type recall that shows up regularly.
How to use this list
If you’re short on time: master the formula topics (7, 12, 15, 21, 26) and the one-line recall topics (4, 5, 10, 16, 24) first — together they’re worth a large share of achievable marks for relatively little study time.
