Beni-Jomsom-Korala Road Reopening: 50+ Landslide Spots Cleared, Traffic by Next Monday

The Beni-Jomsom-Korala road reopening is moving into its final stretch. Infrastructure Development Minister Sunil Lamsal said on October 7 that landslide debris has been cleared and the track opened at all but two of the more than 50 places where floods and landslides on the Kaligandaki river had blocked traffic along the corridor.

According to the minister’s update, the only two spots where work is still unfinished are the bridge approach road at Pokharebagar in Annapurna Rural Municipality-6 of Myagdi, and Kunaota in Raghuganga Rural Municipality-2. Everywhere else, he said, landslide clearing and track opening are complete.

Beni-Jomsom-Korala road reopening: the two spots still under work

At Pokharebagar, crews are building a gabion wall and filling earth to rebuild the bridge approach road. At Kunaota, excavators are being used to open the track at speed. Beyond the clearing work, the minister said road upgrading and the construction of necessary structures along the corridor are continuing.

The update matters because the Beni-Jomsom-Korala corridor is the main land route linking Myagdi to Jomsom and on to the Korala border point with China. When heavy rainfall and floods from September 25 onward buried more than 50 sections under debris, the blockage cut off one of Nepal’s northern trade and tourism arteries. The ministry even flew fuel to work sites by drone to keep machinery running, as covered earlier in https://eve-construction.com/beni-jomsom-korala-road-drone-fuel-delivery/

The Beni-Jomsom-Korala road reopening now has a target date. “Preparations are underway to bring vehicles into operation by next Monday,” the minister said, pointing to October 12.

For travelers and traders, the timeline is significant. Dashain crowds are already moving, and the Korala route is the alternative China trade channel the government has been working to keep alive after floods shut the Rasuwagadhi crossing and damaged the Kerung route. A functioning Beni-Jomsom-Korala road would take pressure off the southern highways and restore a direct path for goods and tourists heading to Upper Mustang. The Beni-Jomsom-Korala road reopening still depends on the two remaining work fronts finishing on schedule. The gabion wall and earth filling at Pokharebagar and the excavator work at Kunaota are the last obstacles. If both finish as planned, vehicles will roll through the full corridor by next Monday, completing a restoration effort that began amid the monsoon damage.

Eve Construction News will keep tracking the Beni-Jomsom-Korala road reopening and report when the corridor is fully open to traffic.
