Pokharebagar Approach Road Repair Opens Small Vehicles on Beni-Jomsom-Korala Route

The Pokharebagar approach road repair has reopened a damaged stretch of the Beni-Jomsom-Korala corridor to small vehicles after the Kaligandaki river washed away about 20 meters of road at the Pokharebagar section on the Myagdi-Mustang border. Nepal’s Infrastructure Development Minister Sunil Lamsal shared the update in a Facebook post on October 8, 2026, confirming that the first stage of emergency repairs is complete and light traffic is moving again.

According to the minister’s update, repair crews filled earth across a roughly 12-meter stretch of the damaged approach and built a retaining wall along the approach road to the left of the Kaligandaki bridge. The retaining structure is meant to stabilize the road shoulder against further river erosion, which had undercut the carriageway during high flows in the Kaligandaki.

In the same post, the minister announced that ‘the Beni-Jomsom-Korala road section is scheduled to resume full operation from next Monday,’ setting October 12, 2026 as the target date for normal traffic to return across the section.

Pokharebagar approach road repair: what crews completed

Work at the site focused on two tasks. First, crews placed and compacted earth fill across the roughly 12-meter gap where the river had carried the road away, re-establishing a drivable surface for small vehicles. Second, they constructed a retaining wall on the approach road to the left of the Kaligandaki bridge, protecting the rebuilt formation from the river’s current. With those works finished, light vehicles are now crossing the repaired section while heavier traffic awaits the full reopening.

The damage at Pokharebagar follows the pattern of monsoon battering this corridor has taken this year. Where the Kaligandaki runs close to the road bench, high flows have repeatedly scoured the base of the formation and carried away whole sections of carriageway. The Pokharebagar approach road repair is the latest in a series of emergency fixes along the route, and engineers say retaining structures at such vulnerable points are essential to keeping the road open once the river recedes.

Why the Beni-Jomsom-Korala corridor matters

The Beni-Jomsom-Korala road is the strategic mountain corridor linking Beni in Myagdi through Jomsom in Mustang to the Korala border crossing with China. Repeated monsoon downpours this season blocked the route at multiple points, cutting off Mustang’s supply of essential goods and stranding travelers. Earlier updates from the minister reported that more than 50 landslide spots had been cleared along the corridor and that fuel for heavy machinery was being delivered by drone in areas where road access was cut.

Restoring the corridor matters for trade, tourism and everyday life in the region. Mustang depends on this single road link for the movement of food, fuel and construction materials, while pilgrims and tourists use it to reach Muktinath and upper Mustang. For residents, each reopening brings relief after weeks of disrupted supplies and restricted movement. The Korala crossing is also an important trade gateway between Nepal and China, so the reopening supports cross-border commerce as well as local transport.

Full reopening targeted for Monday, October 12

With the Pokharebagar approach road repair now carrying small vehicles, attention has shifted to the full resumption of traffic. The minister’s announcement sets Monday, October 12 as the target date, Nepal time, for the Beni-Jomsom-Korala section to return to normal operation. Crews are expected to continue strengthening, widening and clearing work through the weekend so that buses, trucks and other larger vehicles can pass safely.

Eve Construction Nepal will continue to follow the corridor’s reopening and report on road restoration works across the Himalayan region.
