Nepal Irrigation Projects: 3,815 Hectares Added in a Strong 6-Month Push

Nepal irrigation projects have picked up speed over the past six months. According to the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, as reported by The Rising Nepal, irrigation has reached an extra 3,815 hectares of farmland under major schemes, while billions of rupees in canal, embankment and river-control contracts are moving forward. For contractors, suppliers and families in the Terai, this is a sign of steady civil works ahead.

What happened

The ministry released an update on its biggest irrigation and water-resource schemes since the current government was formed. Coverage grew by 600 hectares under the Babai Irrigation Project, 1,300 hectares under Sikta, 610 hectares under Badkapath, 150 hectares under Rani Jamara Kulariya and 1,155 hectares under Mahakali. These projects have received resource commitments from the Ministry of Finance to build canals and extend irrigated areas faster.

Key details of the Nepal irrigation projects

  • Babai: A Rs 4.07 billion resource commitment is funding branch canals in the Western Canal System and new irrigated areas in the Eastern Canal System.
  • Sikta: Rs 5.23 billion has been approved. Of 27 tenders invited, 11 contracts are signed and under construction and 16 are in the award process. About 13 km of canal was built in six months.
  • Badkapath: Rs 1.05 billion is secured, with completion targeted by fiscal year 2027/28.
  • Mahakali: Rs 3.31 billion is secured, with contracts for nine kilometres of main and branch canals.
  • Rani Jamara Kulariya: Contracts worth Rs 961.2 million (Lamki extension canal) and Rs 2.5 billion (Patharaiya extension canal) are signed. Letters of intent were issued for two river-protection contracts estimated at Rs 1.40 billion, and six more tenders worth about Rs 1.06 billion are being evaluated.
  • Sunkoshi Marin Diversion: Fresh bids for civil works are under evaluation after the earlier contract was terminated. Another 0.4 km of embankment and 10 spurs have been finished on the Marin River.
  • Bheri Babai Diversion: An integrated schedule now coordinates the civil, hydro-mechanical and electro-mechanical contractors, targeting completion by FY 2028/29.
  • River control: 44 contracts worth about Rs 1.35 billion have been invited for river-related disaster management, and 12 contracts worth about Rs 22.73 billion have been invited across six national pride projects under the Department of Water Resources and Irrigation.

Why it matters for homeowners in Nepal

Irrigation and river-control works are some of the biggest buyers of cement, steel, sand and aggregate in the Terai. When many canal and embankment packages start at the same time in districts like Bardiya, Banke, Kailali, Kanchanpur and Surkhet, local demand for materials, trucks and skilled workers rises. If you are planning a house in those areas, it is worth locking in quotes from suppliers early and checking that your mason or contractor is not stretched across too many jobs.

There is a safety side too. Embankments, spurs and river-protection works reduce flood risk for the land behind them, which can make nearby plots safer to build on over time. Still, a canal or embankment does not remove all risk, so always check your plot’s flood history before you build.

The update also shows how long big schemes take. Babai and Bheri Babai are now scheduled for the next two to three fiscal years, much like the slow timelines we covered in our post on national pride projects.

What to do next

  1. If you are a contractor, watch the Department of Water Resources and Irrigation and public procurement notices for upcoming canal and river-protection tenders. Our latest tender roundup lists other public works opening now.
  2. If you are building a home in the western Terai, compare material prices from two or three suppliers and confirm delivery dates in writing.
  3. Check whether your land lies near a canal right-of-way or a planned embankment before finalising your naksa (building plan).
  4. Keep an eye on official updates from the Department of Water Resources and Irrigation.

FAQ

How much new land got irrigation?

About 3,815 hectares in six months, under the Babai, Sikta, Badkapath, Rani Jamara Kulariya and Mahakali projects.

When will the Bheri Babai Diversion be finished?

The ministry targets completion by fiscal year 2028/29.

How much farmland is irrigated under joint management today?

Around 233,000 hectares receive regular irrigation through jointly managed schemes, and telemetry now tracks water flow in the Rani Jamara Kulariya and Rajapur systems.

Do these Nepal irrigation projects affect house building costs?

They can. Many canal and embankment contracts starting together raise local demand for cement, steel, aggregate and labour, so prices and availability may tighten in those districts.
