Authorities will instead concentrate on rehabilitation and reconstruction, including restoring roads and bridges cut off by the floods, particularly in remote areas where damaged infrastructure has made aid deliveries difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rescuers have recovered the bodies of at least 1,455 people, but 5,285 others remain missing, including hundreds of foreigners. Families of the missing expressed mixed feelings about the decision, which came weeks after the catastrophic floods devastated central Nepal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government estimates reconstruction and recovery will cost $4.77 billion. Nearly 33,000 people have been affected, and about 7,500 homes were damaged or destroyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Brief_hope_the_Trishuli_tunnel_rescues\"><\/span>Brief hope: the Trishuli tunnel rescues<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hopes for finding survivors were briefly revived after two Nepali workers were rescued from an underground tunnel at the Trishuli hydropower project on September 4, and again two days later when rescuers found a Chinese man at the same location. Those were the last signs of life recovered from the disaster zone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_reconstruction_means_for_builders\"><\/span>What reconstruction means for builders<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Nepal&#8217;s construction industry, the Nepal flood recovery and reconstruction program represents both a monumental task and a major pipeline of work. Restoring road and bridge links in Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading, the districts hit hardest, will come first, since severed highways are still blocking aid and materials from reaching remote settlements. Hydropower sites along the Trishuli and Bhotekoshi rivers, where tunnels, intakes and transmission lines were damaged, will need specialized repair crews. Contractors with experience in mountain roads, tunneling and hydropower repair are expected to be in high demand as the program moves from damage assessment to full execution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Engineers say the rebuild must absorb the lessons of the disaster. The World Bank has already cautioned that simply rebuilding in the same spots, even to higher standards, may not be enough, urging better risk assessment, careful siting of infrastructure, redundancy in critical networks and stronger early warning systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the damage tallied and the search phase formally closed, the Nepal flood recovery and reconstruction effort now enters its long grind.
