It broadly matches the Nepal government&#8217;s own preliminary Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment, which estimated physical damage at $1.81 billion. The government&#8217;s assessment also counted $883.32 million in losses beyond physical assets, taking the overall economic effects of the disaster to about $2.7 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the World Bank, infrastructure suffered the heaviest damage at an estimated $1.38 billion, followed by residential buildings at $185 million and non-residential buildings at $101 million. Damage was concentrated in three central districts: Rasuwa accounted for about $1.07 billion, or 64 percent of the total; Nuwakot suffered roughly $551 million; and Dhading recorded around $39 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Hydropower_plants_and_the_Rasuwa_trade_corridor_hit_hard\"><\/span>Hydropower plants and the Rasuwa trade corridor hit hard<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Flooding of the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers inflicted extensive damage on hydropower projects, solar facilities, electricity transmission infrastructure and transport networks. The August floods affected 12 hydropower projects and one solar project, covering 281.1 MW of operational capacity and 395.02 MW under construction. Damage to transmission lines and substations disrupted the delivery of 149.6 MW of electricity to the national grid. Total affected capacity reached about 430.7 MW, equivalent to 10.6 percent of Nepal&#8217;s installed hydropower and solar capacity at the end of fiscal year 2025-26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Transport infrastructure also suffered badly. More than 55 km of the 82 km Rasuwa trade corridor was damaged, including 40 km completely destroyed, along with 37 motorable bridges and 68 suspension bridges. The corridor connects Kathmandu with the Rasuwagadhi border point with China, one of Nepal&#8217;s most important overland trade gateways, and its disruption has choked cross border commerce at a critical moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The human toll was severe. Nepal&#8217;s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority confirmed 1,455 deaths, while 5,285 people remained missing after the disaster. For the construction sector, the figures underline how exposed Nepal&#8217;s infrastructure is: much of it threads through narrow Himalayan river valleys where a single flood can wipe out roads, bridges and powerhouses in a matter of hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Build_back_better_but_build_smarter\"><\/span>Build back better, but build smarter<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The findings highlight the concentration of physical damage in a small number of districts and the disproportionate impact on infrastructure, underscoring the scale of the reconstruction challenge facing the affected areas,&#8221; the World Bank said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the principle of Build Back Better remains important, the bank cautioned that rebuilding damaged infrastructure in the same locations, even to higher engineering standards, may not always be enough. It called for a broader recovery strategy based on improved risk assessment, more careful decisions on infrastructure siting and design, greater redundancy in critical networks, stronger monitoring and early warning systems, and better integration of infrastructure development across the Himalayan region. Recovery, the bank said, should not merely restore what existed before the floods but reduce the impact of future disasters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Nepal&#8217;s contractors and engineers, the Nepal flood infrastructure damage assessment sets the agenda for years of reconstruction work, from rebuilding the Rasuwa corridor to restoring hundreds of megawatts of generation capacity. With recovery needs running into the billions of dollars, financing and resilient design will decide whether the rebuilt infrastructure survives the next monsoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
