The Mechi Highway Ilam upgrade<\/strong> is moving at speed on the flood-damaged Ilam section of the Mechi Highway, according to an update shared by Minister Sunil Lamsal on his public Facebook page on October 9, 2026. The minister reported that repair and upgrade work on the section damaged by last Ashoj’s floods is progressing steadily, with the contractor continuing operations even through the monsoon season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mechi Highway serves as eastern Nepal’s key road artery, linking Ilam district with the national highway network and the eastern border region. Ilam is one of Nepal’s most productive hill districts, known for its tea gardens, cardamom, ginger and other cash crops, and the highway is the main channel through which this produce reaches markets in the Terai and across the border. When last Ashoj’s floods damaged the road, the disruption hit farmers, traders and travellers alike, underlining why flood repair combined with a proper upgrade matters so much for the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
