The Hulaki road Bardiya section, a 28-kilometre stretch from Rajapur to the Okhariya dam, has climbed to 70 percent physical progress after the government issued a final warning to the contractor, Infrastructure Development Minister Sunil Lamsal announced on Wednesday. The project, long classified among the country’s sick projects, is now targeted for completion by the end of the current fiscal year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The section had originally been scheduled for completion by Ashoj 18, 2080. But when 2083 arrived, physical progress on the Hulaki road Bardiya section was stuck at just 43 percent, making it one of the stalled contracts the ministry has been pressing to revive. According to the minister, continuous monitoring and facilitation by the government, followed by the final warning to the construction company, finally gave the work noticeable momentum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Giving the contractor a last opportunity proved to be the turning point. With the final chance on the table, the project has now reached 70 percent physical progress, and the ministry has set the end of this fiscal year as the deadline to finish the remaining work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hulaki road Bardiya section among revived sick projects<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Hulaki Highway, also known as the Postal Highway, is one of Nepal’s national pride projects, planned to run the length of the southern plains and connect Terai districts that have long depended on poor rural roads. Sections of it have repeatedly slipped into the “sick project” category, the government’s term for contracts that stall far beyond their deadlines, often over contractor capacity, land, or payment disputes. For Bardiya residents, the road links Rajapur’s agricultural belt to wider markets, and its completion has been a local demand for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ministry’s current approach pairs close monitoring with ultimatums, and the Hulaki road Bardiya section is being presented as evidence the formula can work. Whether the fiscal-year-end target holds will depend on the monsoon aftermath, material supply, and the contractor sustaining the current pace through the remaining 30 percent of the work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
