Known locally as the Ukhubari bridge, the crossing has been a long source of hardship for residents on both sides of the river, who have waited nearly a decade for a project that was supposed to take just two years.

According to the minister, the ministry recently called the construction company’s representative to the ministry and provided the facilitation needed to unblock the work. With that intervention, progress has climbed to 93 percent, and the target is now to complete construction and bring the bridge into operation by the end of next month.

Table of Contents

Toggle

Kajrar Khola bridge delayed by contractor dispute

Part of a wider push on stalled projects

Kajrar Khola bridge delayed by contractor dispute

The contract for the Kajrar Khola bridge was signed in 2073 BS, with a completion deadline of two years. Construction was instead disrupted by an internal dispute within the construction company, and the deadline was extended seven times without the bridge being finished. For local communities in Devdah and the adjoining parts of Nawalparasi, the unfinished crossing meant difficult and unreliable travel over the Kajrar Khola, particularly during the monsoon, when river crossings in the Terai become risky or impassable.

Seven deadline extensions over the life of one bridge contract show how a single stalled project can tie up public money for years while delivering nothing to the people it was meant to serve. Projects in this condition are commonly called sick projects in Nepal, and they have become a recurring problem in road and bridge construction, where contracts are often delayed by disputes, weak site management, and slow decision making.

Part of a wider push on stalled projects

Minister Lamsal said the ministry is doing continuous homework to resolve the problems of stalled, or sick, projects across the country, and presented the Kajrar Khola bridge as one of the projects now moving again. The pattern is familiar in Nepal’s bridge sector, where contracts signed with short timelines have repeatedly slipped through extensions while local residents waited for basic connectivity.

Once the remaining works are finished and the bridge opens, the Devdah to Nawalparasi link is expected to give residents a reliable all season crossing, shorten local journeys, and improve access to markets, schools, and health services on both sides of the river. The minister’s timeline puts the opening within weeks, provided the final stage proceeds as planned.

For families living around Devdah, Ukhubari, and the nearby settlements, a finished bridge is a daily necessity rather than a landmark. It is the route used to reach farms and markets, send children to school, and get patients to health facilities, and a dependable crossing removes the detours and risks that an unfinished bridge has imposed for nearly ten years.

Related reading: Lalbakaiya
