The work on the Kakadbhitta-Sitapuri section is part of the eastern section of the project, where overall physical progress has now reached about 55 percent. For travellers and transport operators in eastern Nepal, the steady pace signals that more of the busy corridor will soon offer a smoother and more reliable surface.

The Kakadbhitta-Laukahi road is an important east to west link in the southern part of eastern Nepal. Kakadbhitta, in Jhapa district, is a major eastern entry point for trade and passenger movement, while Laukahi lies to the west in Sunsari district. Roads along this corridor carry buses, trucks, local jeeps, motorcycles, and agricultural produce between border markets, district headquarters, and industrial centres. When a section is unpaved or damaged, journey times rise, vehicle costs increase, and dust and mud become a daily problem for settlements along the route.

Table of Contents

Toggle

Kakadbhitta Sitapuri road blacktopping reaches 25 kilometres in service

What the project means for eastern Nepal

Kakadbhitta Sitapuri road blacktopping reaches 25 kilometres in service

So far, 25 kilometres of road under the project have been blacktopped and brought into traffic operation. That means a substantial part of the eastern section is no longer just a work site: it is already being used by the public. Bringing completed stretches into operation section by section helps road users benefit early, instead of waiting for the entire project to finish before seeing any improvement.

Work on the remaining sections has also gained pace, covering both road construction and blacktopping. On projects of this scale, blacktopping follows earlier stages such as earthwork, sub base and base preparation, and drainage. A faster blacktopping rate usually reflects that those preparatory stages are ready on more stretches, allowing paving crews to keep moving. The reported average of 400 metres per day gives a clear picture of the current speed of work on the Kakadbhitta Sitapuri section.

What the project means for eastern Nepal

The Kakadbhitta Sitapuri road blacktopping matters beyond one road section. A paved and durable surface on this corridor supports trade moving through Kakadbhitta, improves access to markets in Jhapa and neighbouring districts, and makes public transport more predictable for students, patients, traders, and daily commuters. Better roads also lower vehicle maintenance costs and reduce travel time, which is especially important for perishable goods and for businesses that move products to and from the eastern border point.

The project costs a total of Rs 10.06 billion, which is Rs 10 arba 6 crore. The target is to complete construction within this year. Meeting that target will depend on keeping the present pace on the remaining sections, managing weather and material supply, and finishing related works such as shoulders, drainage, and road safety features alongside the blacktopping itself.

Other major road upgrades in the east and across the country show the same push to modernise busy highways. Eve Construction has also covered the Mechi Highway upgrade in Ilam and the Kanchanpur Kamala highway upgrade. Together, these projects underline how road investment in eastern Nepal is focused on smoother surfaces, stronger corridors, and better connections between hill districts, the Tarai, and border trade points.

For now, the headline figures are encouraging: about 55 percent physical progress on the eastern section, 25 kilometres already blacktopped and open to traffic, and paving continuing at around 400 metres a day. If that pace is maintained, road users on the Kakadbhitta Sitapuri section should see the remaining work take shape quickly as the project pushes toward completion within this year.

Source:
