The update brings relief to travellers and local residents who depend on the crossing, which connects Ghiring in Tanahun district with Baudikali in East Nawalparasi, also known as Nawalpur. The repair restores a direct road link between the two districts at a busy time of year, when movement increases ahead of major festivals and families travel between home districts and workplaces.

According to the update, flooding in the second week of Asoj damaged the approach road on the Tanahun side of the bridge. Approach roads are the short but critical stretches that connect a bridge deck to the wider road network. When an approach is washed out or badly damaged, a bridge can stand intact yet remain unusable, because vehicles cannot safely reach or leave it. That is why the damage at Kharsang Ghat disrupted traffic even though the problem was on the approach rather than on the main bridge structure itself.

Table of Contents

Toggle

Why the Kharsang Ghat bridge approach road matters for Ghiring and Baudikali

Temporary repair restores traffic, permanent work to follow

Why the Kharsang Ghat bridge approach road matters for Ghiring and Baudikali

Kharsang Ghat sits on the Kaligandaki River, one of the major river systems in central Nepal. Crossings over the Kaligandaki carry local trade, school and health trips, agricultural produce, and construction materials between hill settlements and market centres. For communities in Ghiring and Baudikali, a working crossing shortens journeys that would otherwise require a long detour to another bridge. Reliable access also helps emergency services, public transport operators, and small businesses that depend on daily movement across the river.

The temporary repair was arranged immediately, with the festival season kept in mind. Dashain is the busiest travel period in Nepal, when large numbers of people return home and road use rises sharply across the country. Restoring traffic before that peak reduces pressure on alternative routes and lowers the risk of isolation for villages that rely on this crossing. Local passengers, jeep and bus operators, and traders moving goods for the festival market are among those most likely to benefit from the reopening.

Temporary repair restores traffic, permanent work to follow

For now, the Kharsang Ghat bridge approach road is open to traffic again after the temporary work. Drivers should still travel with care, especially where fresh repair work meets the older road surface and near the riverbank, where conditions can change after further rain. Temporary repairs are designed to restore movement quickly and safely, but they are not the final engineering solution for a flood damaged approach.

Permanent construction of the Kharsang Ghat bridge approach road will start right after Dashain, according to the update. That timing allows traffic to keep moving during the festival peak while setting up a longer term fix once the busiest period passes. A permanent approach will need proper compaction, drainage, and protection against future flooding and erosion, so the road can withstand heavy rain and seasonal rises in the river without repeated disruption.

Similar approach road problems have affected other Kaligandaki crossings in recent weeks. Eve Construction has also reported on the Pokharebagar approach road repair on the Kaligandaki and on work using geobags at the Maldhunga bridge approach road. Together, those cases show how vulnerable bridge approaches can be during and after the monsoon, and why drainage and riverbank protection matter as much as the bridge itself.

Residents and travellers using the Kharsang Ghat crossing will now watch for the start of permanent work after Dashain and for clear information on any short traffic arrangements while that work is underway. For the moment, the key development is simple: the flood damaged approach on the Tanahun side has been repaired on a temporary basis, the bridge link between Tanahun and Nawalpur is working again, and a permanent solution is planned next.

Source: Minister Sunil Lamsal’s Facebook post,
