The six-lane widening of the Araniko Highway runs from Suryabinayak in Bhaktapur to Dhulikhel in Kavrepalanchok, and is being built in two separate sections: Suryabinayak to Sanga, which is 7.3 km long, and Sanga to Dhulikhel, which is 8.5 km long.<\/p>\n<p>According to the project office, the Kavre side of the Suryabinayak Dhulikhel road expansion has moved faster than the Bhaktapur side. The Suryabinayak to Sanga section, on the Bhaktapur side, is 54 percent complete. Officials say progress there is lower because its contract agreement was made later than the contract for the Kavre side.<\/p>\n<p>On the Sanga to Dhulikhel section, crews have laid the first layer of blacktop on 6.5 km of road. The target is to finish the main construction work on the Kavre side by Mangsir 23. On the Suryabinayak to Sanga section, side structures are nearly complete, and the first blacktop layer has been finished on 1.5 km of the six-lane road. At the Sanga underpass, the first blacktop layer now covers 2 km on the two-lane side.<\/p>\n<p>Project chief Superintendent Engineer Vijay Kumar Mahato said work is being sped up to finish within the set time. He said that if no unexpected problem arises, the main work will finish inside the contract period, and only some small works may need extra time. Bridges over the Jagati Khola, Mahadev Khola, and Punyamata Khola have not been built, which is disrupting traffic on the route. Mahato said a dispute over the design of all three bridges, going back to the very beginning of the project, has kept bridge construction from moving ahead.<\/p>\n<p>Heavy tippers that run at night are adding to the trouble. They damage the road near the bridge sites, causing potholes and traffic jams. To reduce congestion during the Dashain season, potholes near the bridges are being filled and rolled level, officials said.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Contract_details_and_completion_deadlines\"><\/span>Contract details and completion deadlines<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Suryabinayak to Sanga section was contracted to Ashish Kumar Shrestha-Bandhan-Bhagawati JV at Rs 3,889,300,000 including VAT. Work on the section started in Poush 2079 BS. The original contract period ended in Poush 2082 BS and has now been extended to next Falgun.<\/p>\n<p>The Sanga to Dhulikhel section of the Suryabinayak Dhulikhel road expansion was contracted to Lama Construction at Rs 4,056,400,000 including VAT. Work began in Mangsir 2079 BS. Its original contract period ended in Mangsir 2082 BS and has been extended to next Mangsir.<\/p>\n<p>With the Kavre side nearing the finish line and bridge work still waiting to move forward, the coming months will be decisive for the highway widening project.
