Together they are meant to bring order to intersections and corridors where traffic now moves with little guidance.

Clear lane markings tell drivers where they belong on the road. Marked crosswalks tell pedestrians where it is safe to cross. Signs communicate speed limits, directions and warnings. Each element is small on its own, but together they form the language of the road.

The work is part of a broader push to manage the capital’s traffic, which has grown far faster than the road network. New vehicles enter the valley every day, while road space stays fixed. In that reality, managing the existing streets better is often more effective than building new ones.

The valley’s traffic police have long asked for better markings to support their work. Directing traffic at a busy intersection is far harder when no one can see where the lanes are. Painted lines give both officers and drivers a common reference, which makes enforcement fairer and more consistent.

Night work from 9 pm to 6 am

Kathmandu’s roads are congested through the day, and closing lanes for marking work would add to the gridlock. By scheduling the work between 9 pm and 6 am, the crews keep daytime traffic flowing while still covering ground each night.

Night work also has a practical advantage for the paint itself: cooler temperatures and lighter traffic let fresh markings set properly before thousands of vehicles pass over them.

Expected to cut accidents and protect pedestrians

The expectation is that clear traffic signs and organized Kathmandu road safety markings will reduce accidents and make movement safer for drivers and pedestrians. In his post, the minister said the improved signs and markings are expected to cut accidents and make travel safer for drivers and pedestrians alike.

Pedestrians are among the most vulnerable users of Kathmandu’s roads. Marked crossings and clear signs give them defined space in traffic that currently offers little. For drivers, consistent markings reduce the guesswork at intersections and lane merges, where many collisions happen.

For the Kathmandu road safety markings to work, drivers must respect them. Paint alone does not stop a speeding vehicle, but it removes the excuse of not knowing where the lanes and crossings are. Combined with traffic police enforcement, the markings give the city a foundation for safer streets.

Low cost measures like markings and signs deliver outsized returns: they are cheap compared to road widening, can be rolled out quickly, and start working the day they are painted.

The program will be judged by what happens on the streets in the coming months. If accident numbers fall at the treated locations, the case for extending the Kathmandu road safety markings across the valley becomes hard to argue against.

Source: <a
