Prithvi Highway Galaundi Traffic Fully Restored After 160m Back-Cut

Prithvi Highway Galaundi traffic restored is the news from Dhading, where the 160-metre subsided section at Galaundi near Gajuri has been back-cut on the inner side and opened to traffic, Minister Sunil Lamsal announced in Facebook posts on October 10, 2026. With the highway fully reopened, one of Nepal’s busiest road corridors is again carrying normal traffic in both directions.

Nine machines and nine tippers in the morning push

Earlier the same day, the minister had reported that nine machines and nine tippers were working at speed on back-cutting near the subsided section at Galaundi, where cutting by the Trishuli river had caused about 160 metres of road to subside. The target set in the morning was to open the track by the evening. A repaired one-kilometre alternative road from Ghatbesi to Galaundi was already carrying small vehicles, keeping local movement alive while the main highway section remained closed.

Back-cutting is a standard emergency technique on hill roads. Excavators cut into the stable inner slope to create a new running surface when the outer edge of the road has slipped away. Deploying nine machines and nine tippers at once allowed crews to cut, load and haul spoil continuously through the day, which is why the track could be readied within hours rather than days.

Back-cut complete: Prithvi Highway Galaundi traffic restored

By the minister’s second update later the same day, the work was done. The subsided 160-metre stretch had been back-cut on the inner side and opened to traffic, so Prithvi Highway Galaundi traffic restored became the headline of the day. The minister confirmed that traffic on the Prithvi Highway was fully restored, ending the disruption on this critical route.

Why the Prithvi Highway matters

The Prithvi Highway connects Kathmandu with Pokhara and Nepal’s western regions, carrying thousands of passenger buses, trucks and private vehicles every day. A closure at Galaundi, in Dhading district near Gajuri, chokes a vital artery for tourism, trade and daily commuting. A same-day restoration therefore matters enormously for travellers, transporters and the local economy, sparing them long detours or overnight halts.

Night travel caution

The minister urged road users to take special care when travelling at night. Freshly back-cut sections can have loose material, uneven edges and limited visibility after dark, so drivers should keep speeds down, use headlights properly and follow any instructions from traffic police or site teams on the stretch.

What happens next

With Prithvi Highway Galaundi traffic restored, attention now turns to monitoring the Galaundi section, since cutting by the Trishuli river remains a risk when river levels are high. Road maintenance teams will keep watch on the back-cut formation, and travellers on the Prithvi Highway should check the latest road condition updates before setting out, particularly when river levels rise.
