The flood-damaged Beni-Jomsom road will be back in operation before Dashain, Infrastructure Development Minister Sunil Lamsal announced on October 5, as reconstruction and landslide clearance along the vital Mustang corridor pick up speed.
Reconstruction and road operation work on the Beni-Jomsom section is moving at a fast pace, the minister said. On the Ghasa-Korala section, landslides have been cleared and two-way traffic has been brought into operation. In the Tatopani area, where the road was cut away by erosion, back cutting and retaining wall construction have restored traffic movement. Approach construction for the Pokharebagar bridge is ongoing.
Beni Jomsom road reopening: section by section
The update breaks the corridor’s recovery into sections. From Rahughat to Siruwari, one-way traffic is currently operating. Near Pokharebagar, the track at the Ratopani section has been opened. The Ghasa-Korala stretch, a known landslide-prone zone on the route to Korala, is now carrying two-way traffic after clearance.
The Beni-Jomsom road is the lifeline for Mustang district, carrying tourists, pilgrims headed to Muktinath, and essential supplies. Its closure during the monsoon stranded travelers and cut off local communities, so a pre-Dashain reopening would restore the corridor just as the peak autumn travel season begins.
Part of a wider monsoon recovery push
The announcement fits into the ministry’s running monsoon damage response, which has included reopening the Beni-Tatopani section after Kali Gandaki erosion and clearing the Karnali Highway in Surkhet. Travelers planning Mustang trips around Dashain should still check the latest road condition before setting out, as one-way sections and ongoing retaining wall works mean movement remains controlled in places.
